Contrasted with the cool hues of frost and snow, the fiery light of February is unforgettable. Veteran Yosemite photographers like instructor Keith S. Walklet know that winter conditions add even more beauty to an already spectacular landscape. This workshop was scheduled specifically to take advantage of these conditions and the potential to capture one of the park's most elusive images; Horsetail Fall backlit by the setting sun.
With the ultimate “outdoor studio” of Yosemite Valley for inspiration, the instructor shares his technique for working with the light and the landscape. Blending forethought with quiet contemplation, Keith works with students to identify potential images, distill the composition to its essential elements and move beyond “iconic” documentation into the realm of personal expression.
This five-day workshop is beneficial to photographers of a beginning to advanced intermediate level, developing a solid foundation for beginners and a visual voice for the advanced intermediate artists.
KEITH S. WALKLET is a native of the East Coast and graduate of Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia. He traded a daily commute (from Connecticut to New York City) and most of his belongings, for a camera and motorcycle, with which he explored the continental U.S. and Alaska. Arriving in Yosemite National Park in 1984 “for one winter”, he set about documenting its grand scenes and subtle beauty first with 35mm, then 6x7 cm, and most recently, a 4x5 field camera.
The “one winter” became fourteen years. Living and working in the park provided an opportunity to thoroughly explore the Yosemite region with his camera. Over time he has demonstrated an uncanny ability to anticipate and capture the spectacular atmospheric phenomena definitive of the alpine landscape.
In addition to his Sierra Nevada and Yosemite work, Keith has traveled extensively to photograph the western United States. His fine prints are created using a revolutionary printing process that combines traditional photographic processes with computer technology.
Keith and his wife currently reside in Boise, Idaho, where he now focuses full-time on fine photography and written interpretation of the natural world under the auspices of QuietWorks Photography.
