About this Photograph - Sierra Nevada, Winter Evening

The Sierra Nevada provide a beautiful and dramatic western boundary of the Great Basin desert. This transition is rarely captured, usually the escarpment of the Sierra dominate the artist’s image. This image, from later in Adams career, places much more emphasis on the subtlety and serenity of the desert landscape.

Portfolio Four was produced in 1963 in an edition of 260 with 15 prints in each.
Published by the Sierra Club with the assistance of the Varian Foundation, it is dedicated to Russell Varian, co-inventor of the Klystron tube.

Russell Varian and his father John were early members of the Sierra Club and shared a love for the wilderness and nature. Excerpts of their writings are included on the slip sheet for each photograph.

‘The wonder and eternity of the wilderness... put man and his desires into the proper perspective.’ - RHV ‘Heaven world, complete and beautiful, farewell ! The vision passes but the dream remains.’ - JOV

Klystron tubes were originally used to create specific frequency radar emissions, and have subsequently be developed for radiation therapies.
