Kerik Kouklis Biography
Kerik Kouklis is a fine art photographer based in Placerville, California, where he lives with his wife and two daughters. He has been involved in making hand-made photographs since 1989.
Kerik grew up with photography, helping to build a darkroom in his parent's basement in his early teens. He moved into large format cameras and sheet film in the late 1980's, and now works primarily with the 7”x17”, 14”x17” and 12”x20” formats.
Drawn to the tonal range and delicate strength of platinum/palladium images, Kerik Kouklis specialized in this medium beginning in 1995. He has since perfected and added to his technique, and has evolved his entire craft into an exploration of the capabilities of this medium. The platinum/palladium medium has a much different look than gelatin silver. The prints tend to be somewhat softer in appearance and are effused with delicate midtones and a gentle glow.
After 15 years dedicated to platinum and gum printing, Kerik turned his attention to the wet plate collodion process in 2004. He is one of a growing number of contemporary photographers pushing the collodion process in new directions. His collodion portraits and still lives are both beautiful and disturbing. A book of his collodion images is currently in the works.
Kerik had taught platinum printing classes since 1997, and more recently wet plate collodion workshops. His work is in private and public collections in many countries.
